What to see in León
Almost everything is a short walk from home. Approximate times; tap “Directions” for the route from the apartment.
The “Pulchra Leonina”, one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in Europe, famous for its 1,800 m² of stained glass that floods the interior with colour. A must.
Tip: go in the late afternoon, with the sun low, to see the stained glass at its best.
Directions from the houseA Romanesque gem with the Royal Pantheon, called the “Sistine Chapel of the Romanesque” for its remarkably preserved 12th-century frescoes.
Tip: don't miss the Royal Pantheon (museum entrance) — absolutely worth it.
Directions from the houseOne of the few Gaudí buildings outside Catalonia, neo-Gothic in style. You can visit inside, and its museum is well worth it.
Tip: at night it's lit up and the photo from San Marcelo square is lovely.
Directions from the houseThe heart of León's tapas scene, around Plaza de San Martín. Here, with every beer or wine, the tapa is free! Great atmosphere and fair prices.
Tip: bar-hop, ordering one drink in each, and try lots of different tapas.
Directions from the houseA former monastery and pilgrims' hospital with one of the most impressive Plateresque façades in Spain. Now a Parador hotel; its square is picture-perfect.
Tip: pop in for a drink and peek at the cloister; at dusk the façade turns golden.
Directions from the houseThe Contemporary Art Museum of Castilla y León, with a coloured-glass façade inspired by the Cathedral's stained glass. Architecturally award-winning.
Tip: check its programme of temporary exhibitions before you go.
Directions from the houseJust over half an hour away: another Gaudí palace (the Episcopal), a cathedral, Roman walls and the famous cocido maragato (eaten in reverse!). Perfect for a day.
Tip: book a table for the cocido maragato and pace yourself… it starts with the meat.
Directions from the houseAncient Roman gold mines turned into a unique reddish landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spectacular viewpoints and trails among chestnut trees.
Tip: head to the Orellán viewpoint at sunset; the light on the red earth is incredible.
